Before the construction of the first reservoir in Kowloon, the public relied on well water and groundwater from the Yau Ma Tei Pumping Station built in 1895. To meet the increasing demand for drinking water, the construction of the Kowloon Reservoir began in 1903 and was completed three years later to replace the small wells and the Yau Ma Tei Pumping Station for water supply. After the pumping station ceased operation in 1911, only a Red Brick Building remained till today. In 2000, this old pumping station building of the Water Supplies Department was declared a Grade 1 historic building.

Starting from 3 September 2021, "H2OPE CENTRE" will broadcast two feature videos about the history of water supply with the themes "Red Brick House in Yau Ma Tei" and "Kowloon Reservoir", enabling visitors to know more about these important waterworks. The videos are provided by TVB. Visitors are welcome to see the videos.
